"Black lung. Asthma. Cancer. Emphysema" -- masks marked withconditions often attributed to coal were scattered among the faces of aPortland, Ore., crowd on Monday.
On stage, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke against theexport of Montana and Wyoming coal through six proposed ports in Oregon andWashington.
"They are not coming hereto bring you prosperity and jobs," Kennedy, president of the Waterkeeper Alliance, told the 400-plus rally attendees."They're coming to ship their poison, so that they can poison the peoplein China, and that poison is going to come back here and poison your salmon andyour children. So don't let it happen."
As The Huffington Post reported in November, before the coal everstarts its voyage across the Pacific, mile and a half long trains must firstcarry it through dozens of Western communities, including the cities of Spokaneand Seattle, along a northwest route that originates in the Powder River Basinof Montana and Wyoming. There, the combustible rock would be strip-mined, triggeringa cascade of local, national and global health and environmental consequences.
Opposition to the ports is mounting. Therally in Portland is the latest of a string of protests and pleas that emphasize the potentialpublic health fallout should the projects move forward. In a letter on Tuesday, the Washington State Department of Ecology urged that the cumulative effects of all the ports be studied. Oregon'sgovernor asked the federal government in April to address how increasing exportsto China and other Asian counties will "fit with the larger strategy ofmoving to a lower carbon future," reported The Oregonian.
Experts now estimate that the influence on climate change of the combined coal proposals would exceed that of the contentiousKeystone XL pipeline.
"Thescale of these proposals is unprecedented," Eric de Place, seniorresearcher at Seattle-based Sightline Institute, an environmentalthink tank, said during a press call on Thursday. Running at full capacity, henoted, the six proposed ports could send around 150 million tons of coal toAsia, far more than the entire U.S. shipped abroad last year.
Someof the most immediate and tangible effects would be felt by the communitiesalong the rail corridor. Cheney, Wash., Mayor Tom Trulove said during the presscall that more than 60 trains could soon be "tooting and rumbling"through his city every day.
In addition to the noise pollution, which researchers suggest can raiserisks of everything from heart disease to cognitive impairments in kids, Truloveis also concerned about slower emergency response times for fire trucks, ambulances and police that need to traverse the five railroad crossings intown.Headmits that he hasn't even given much thought to coal dust that might blow offeach train car during its journey, nor has he really considered the dieselparticles pumped into the air by both the trains and ocean-going tankers.
Exposure to coal dust, which can includetoxic heavy metals such as mercury and lead, has been associated with greaterrisks of emphysema and chronic bronchitis, as well as reduced memory, motorskills and attention spans in children. Meanwhile, diesel pollution posesanother set of risks: respiratory problems, heartdisease and cancer.
"One of the most disturbing issuesis that diesel particulate matter has been shown to cause abnormal lungdevelopment in kids," Dr. Frank James, a private practice physician inBellingham, Wash., told The Huffington Post. "And kids that live near thetrain lines are going to be disproportionately affected. These are mostly poor children, the least able to get the resources to deal with asthma and otherproblems."
Once the coal sets out to sea, the dangerof an oil spill also comes into play, as TheHuffington Post reported last month. Research also suggests that mercury andother pollutants resulting from Asia's eventual burning of the coal would come back to haunt theU.S. west coast.
Chineseactivists have their own concerns.
As The Oregonian reported, Hao Xin of the QiantangRiver Waterkeeper in China told the Portland crowd that lower domestic demandis prompting U.S. coal companies to look overseas for new markets for theirproduct. (The last coal-burning power plants in Oregonand Washington are scheduled to shut down, in 2020 and 2025, respectively.)
"Chinashould not become the dumping ground for your coal industry," he said."We Chinese people need clean air, clean water."

China has to keep their economy growing or face anotherrevolution. No coal exports through the Pacific Northwest to China.

Nor is there "free" in markets with repercussionsand responsibilities.
09:20 PM on05/11/2012
What do youmean by "responsibilities"? As for repercussions, I vehementlydisagree. There are ALWAYS repercussions in human action. At thevery minimum by taking one action you are not able to take another at the sametime. There is always opportunity cost, so to define freedom to excludeconsequence is to define an impossible situation.
I define freedom simply as being permitted to do whatever you want in so far asyou do not aggression, which includes violence against a person, theft ofproperty, purposeful fraud, etc.

Yeah I guess you would, but that bar is pretty low and veryirresponsible. If you poison me but are only out to get rich itisn't aggressive but it is still criminal and I will still hunt you down. Neanderthals were free, and they died out. Go figure.

If I poison you it's definitely an act of aggression. Iincluded fraud to make it clear I was using something broader than simpleviolence. That's perhaps not "aggression" as one might normallyuse the term, but for why I call it aggression, see here:
http://blog.mises.org/5327/

I can answer both with the same response. If you poison meby making my dirt, water and air toxic because you don't think you need to beresponsible, after all it is more profitable not to buy the filters, to thelocals you manufacture near then it isn't fraud or aggressive but it is still acrime well worth hunting you down for after my children die of leukemia. Youmay be temped to say that wouldn't happen but it already does, worldwide.

60 trains a day means one every 24 minutes on average. Ifeach train is one and a half miles long the reality will be that each traincrossing is blocked for at least 50% of every day. It also means that no oneliving withing a mile or more of the track will ever get to sleep.

alternative energy is nothing more than a dream and forsome to get rich on. Our plant will burn up oneday , not because of what we use for energy. But because our sun is young andas it gets older , it gets bigger to a point where its close to earth and weburn up.
